Burton
Burton-on-Trent is a town in East Staffordshire, England. The town is also called Burton upon Trent or simply Burton. It is situated near river Trent. Its inhabitants are called Burtonians. The town is famous for brewing and was home to many breweries when it was thriving. Currently, the town is home to five breweries. The town is inhabited by slightly over 65,000 people.
There are currently five breweries in Burton, Coors, Marstons, Burton Bridge, Tower Brewery and Cottage Brewery.
The town is the administrative centre of East Staffordshire and is part of Burton constituency. The mother church of Burton is St. Modwens though there are four other Anglican churches built to serve the growing population. These are St. Paul's St. John the Divine, St. Chad's, and All Saints church.
Burton is home to a rich culture and other few cultural monuments. Until recently, the town's most distinguishable landmark was Drakelow power station but has since been demolished. The town was home to the peel family who founded what came to be modern day police force in England. The peel house is still in the town even today. It has several acting theatres and is the town that holds the statutes fair; a fair that takes place every first Monday and Tuesday after 29th September.
In terms of business, the cooper shopping mall is the main shopping area and was opened in 1970.
The older riverside shopping center is now sealed off pending demolition. Octagon centre is also a new shopping centre that has been added of late. There are others like Matalan Aldi and many others.
The main theatre for live, performing and visual arts is the Brewhouse which is run by East Staffordshire council. The William Allit School based at Newhall is the specialist art college in the town.
In sports, the town is home to Burton Albion, a club that plays in the English football league.
Burton also has a cricket team - Burton Cricket Club.
Burton RUFC is one of the oldest rugby union clubs in the country, having been established in 1870.
Around 13000 students from Burton and surrounding areas attend Burton College.
Branston Pickle was invented in Branston in Burton.
